Madeira Soirée Duo

This project explores Madeira's rich musical heritage since the

 19th century

The Madeira Soirée Duo showcases the virtuosity of music played on the Madeiran Traditional Chordophones and the Guitar.

The history of exploration of Braguinha (also known as Machete) dates back to the 19th century with the composer, Cândido Drummond de Vasconcellos, and his colleague, the guitarist Manoel Joaquim Monteiro Cabral. Our repertoire includes not only Drummond's ball dances written for Machete and Guitar but also arias and European dances, which were prevalent in Madeiran gatherings and soirées.

Additionally, we push the boundaries of the Rajão and Viola d'Arame alongside the Guitar, presenting our unique adaptations of classical music pieces for these instruments. We aim to offer the audience an original perspective on traditional instruments, highlighting the avant-garde work we have been developing with Madeiran musical and cultural heritage.

Madeira has been a source of inspiration for both national and international composers, as well as a hub for sharing and creating knowledge. This tradition continues with our regional composers and musicians, reflecting a vibrant musical culture in line with the rest of Europe.
